Community Chess News and Updates: Latest Chess Updates for Everyone

Chess is more than just a game. It teaches patience, strategy, and decision-making. It builds confidence and creates a sense of community. I want to share the latest chess updates that matter to families, chess enthusiasts, and community supporters. These updates show how chess is growing and how it helps build stronger communities, especially in underserved areas.

Our Latest Updates in Our Community

Some of you may have attended our Community Chess Night program at the CEC over the past 3 years. It has been a great run. Unfortunately, for the next year they have eliminated some of their programs, chess being one of them. the Board Room Chess will continue working together with our community partners to find ways to bring chess to underserved communities, at little or no cost. We appreciate our partnership with the CEC and will continue to look for ways and funding to bring chess to the community. In the meantime, be on the watch for pop-up chess opportunities. Should your neighborhood or surroundings be the deciding factor as to whether your child has a safe space to learn chess. No it should not! Currently we are popping up at the Avenue Market, 1700 N Pennsylvania Ave. Every Saturday in July and scheduled days in August. Follow us on social media to see where we are popping up.

Summer YouthWorks Program

This summer we have had the pleasure of engaging 16 youth and young adults during our summer Youthworks program. Using chess and workshops centered around the disciplines of chess, our youth have learned life skills which help them to respond to life situations, some of which can be uncomfortable or could lead to negative consequences.

Youth also learned about the process of government and how decision that can impact their future are made. Youth are encouraged to learn more about policies and finding ways to participate in leadership and community opportunities that gives attention to their voice.

Workforce readiness helps high school students bridge the gap between school as success after high school. During our summer program youth prepared a digital portfolio and professional resume and received an opportunity to understand choices available after high school. Work based programs such as apprenticeships, internships and co-ops can connect youth to real life work experiences and help prepare them for life after high school.
